This annual competition, now in its 15th year, provides the chance for young composers to hear their pieces performed by professional musicians and to get individual advice and feedback on their compositions.
It is open to those aged 18 and under who live or go to school in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. This year entrants were invited to compose for violin and piano. All entries were played by Phillip Granell and Matthew Drinkwater of the Phaedra Ensemble at the Finals in December 2020 in Cambridge, with feedback provided by the Judge Ewan Campbell and the performers. A selection of the entries were performed at a short concert in the Chapel at Churchill College, Cambridge on Friday 9 July 2021, as part of the Cambridge Music Festival. The concert also included two works commissioned from the joint winners of the 2019 competition, Olivia Ransome and Henry Alexander.
